4/20/16 Island Time 5 5 5 5 5 Very well equipped and clean boat.  The entertainment and outboard sections of the owner's notes need updating, and it would help if an actual list of onboard items was available (I got your standard list which was helpful but not complete).  We brought some things we found onboard but no biggie. Our standard list is what the boats start the season with. Upon occasion guests will leave additional items, especially spices, and we just leave them on. But don't count on it if it isn't on our standard list.

I was not physically up to single handing but do appreciate being allowed to try. Note from Roger: This guest was not in physical condition to operate the boat solo. His companion failed to show as promised. When he could not continue, my son and I took the chase boat to Canada to rescue him. I knew it was iffy and possibly dangerous to let him go. But he begged...it was a many years dream of his. Even in retrospect I salute him for trying. Better to have tried and failed than to fail to try.

5/11/16 Grey Goose 4 5 4 3 4 San Juan Yachting does a wonderful job.  I do feel when we arrive back to our slip we should be given an opportunity to remove all of gear along with garbage with ease.  When we pulled up to our slip the cleaners  were bringing their cleaning carts up top the boats not allowing us room to remove our gear safely.  We had to sit our suitcases along with other supplies on the dock while the boat next to us was being washed down.  The cleaning person proceeded to get our suitcase and us wet.  I realize the turn around time is quick and they need to do their job yet us being able to disembark is just as important. The lack or carts for the guest also is a real problem removing our gear. My apologies for getting your luggage both blocked and wet! That will be a special item of training for our cleaners this year (although one would hope it wouldn't be necessary ;-)

6/4/16 Cecilia  5 4 4 5 4 I previously provided a large number of comments I will not repeat here.    I did feel that the safety and orientation briefings left too little time between them and the boat checkout.  By the time (of day) the briefing was done we really needed to take time to get some dinner before getting familiar with the boat.  We had the later of the two evening checkout slots but even so felt quite rushed to get familiar with the boat prior to the checkout.  Your staff was patient with us during the checkout so it all worked out OK.  Providing a simple, light meal between the safety and orientation briefings would be great!  With a sandwich or something at that time we could have put dinner off till late but as it was my family would have been very cranky if I didn't let them get something to eat after the briefings. You are right. Timing for a meal is very difficult. During peak season Marlene and I provide a BBQ to address that, but other times I'm afraid that you may need to bring a sandwich or pack a picnic for the crew during checkout. We can try to defer the checkout until the next morning, when your charter officially starts, but most guests would rather be a bit hungry and eat after the checkout. I agree there certainly is not time to go out to dinner between the briefings and most checkouts.

6/4/16 Salus 5 5 4 5 5 It would be very helpful to have a detailed map of the marinas in the San Juans available in one the onboard references. It was a little stressful coming into a slip for the night in a marina that I was unfamiliar with and not knowing the layout of the marina. For future guests, if they radio for a  slip assignment, they could then take a quick look at a marina map and know where the G-dock is and which side is odd vs. even, will it be a starboard/port tie-up etc. This will also help with planning for fuel/pumpout in a busy marina.  The Waggoner's on board each boat has marina layouts, although not large and detailed. It remains,however, the best source we know of.

Yes, we take Sundays off. We'll try to be clear on instructions for the rare Sunday return boats.

6/11/16 Kingfisher 4 3 3 5 4 Overall we had a good experience with this our 3rd charter in the San Juans. Kingfisher had many great handling features and creature comforts; it would have been a great time if the electrical system worked better. The engine stopped charging the house and thruster batteries and the tech was unable to reset this complex system. Fortunately the generator kept up the house batteries but that was a bit disturbing in otherwise peaceful anchorages.  Yes, the charging system is complex. It works well, but if one battery gets drawn down the protection systems kick in and restoring them is something we will try to make clearer and simpler. Thank you for the suggestion!

8/3/16 Island Time 5 5 4 5 5 We LOVED this boat and would definitely charter it again. Perfect for two people. The only reason I rated condition slightly lower is that we discovered the black water holding tank had not been emptied previously, our instructor helped us empty on first day. I would have appreciated a bit more instruction on the boat systems the night before as I was a complete beginner when it comes to generator, plumbing and other systems. Our instructor, Capitan Bob, was awesome and exactly who we needed for our first day out on boat. Holding tanks are a tough issue for us, frankly. 98% of the time the previous guests empty them as they should,but on occasion, some think it is empty when it is not,  And it is nearly impossible to see on most boats,and gauges tend to get gunked up. Sorry about that.
8/5/16 Florian 5 5 2 5 4 We were very disappointed that we were informed after moving into the boat that the stern thrusters were inoperable.  The staff tried to downplay their importance, but it had an impact on our trip and our enjoyment of our time on board. Sorry it impacted your enjoyment. I'm glad you had the bow thruster. We always feel badly when something breaks and we need to order parts to fix it and there is no time or else delay your departure. Will do the best we can.

The keeper on the windless is gone inturn I used the loose handle in the locker to hold under the down side of the chain when bringing in or letting out anchor. Over size links let chain double up on Gypsy can jump out if not careful. I would add a heavier line at end of chain in locker. Dinghy did leak at transom outlet had to bail with sponge. The original owner of the boat was former US Coast Guard. And he believed in a BIG anchor, BIG chain, and a BIG powerful windlass. Deploying and retrieving Sea Eagle’s anchor has always been a bit tricky, but you never have to worry about dragging while you’re sleeping, even in high winds. Keeper has been replaced with a bigger snubber line. Dinghy patched. No more leaks!

Weird mystery—we had several weeks where several GPS's didn't work...then they started working again. Some said it was a solar flare. Could not find an equipment malfunction. Important to have those basic chart navigation skills for emergencies, right?

8/6/16 Shenandoah 5 4 4 5 5 Shenandoah was enjoyable but could use some TLC.  There were some minor details (door latches not working, wind direction indicator stuck behind VHF antenna on mast) that couldn't be quickly remedied before our trip.  A slow leak in the dinghy needed pumping a couple times.  Overall the trip was fantastic though.  SJS makes you feel at home - like you belong on their boats.  They give all the detail you would ever need to stay safe during your trip, as well as tips for enhancing your experience.  SJS will continue to see us every year! Thanks for your good attitude, but we aren't satisfied until every thing is working properly for you. Thanks for pointing out where we need to improve. That helps!

8/19/16 Kingfisher 5 5 5 5 5 A lighter weight dingy would be helpful. With the RIB and 20 hp ob, it weighs a few hundred lbs and is impossible to lift off the beach  if left on a falling tide. Aternativly, the dingy anchor could be changed to a Danforth type with a running trip line to shore but that technique is a bit challenging to do right and could still leave one stuck on shore until the tide floats the dingy. Good point. Yes, outboards especially get heavy on power boats, and the tide does present challenges.

They had clearly been taken from another boat (probably Grey Goose) and many issues/items/descriptions in the notes were different on Endurance or did not apply at all. I know this is somewhat outside of your control but if you insisted that owners provide adequate and specific notes it would decrease the stress associated with taking out an unfamiliar boat. Thanks. Helpful response. Thank you. We are addressing that right now. Assembled a team that prepared Owners Notes Guidelines. We now require Notes to be written by a professional, but owners can opt for a waiver if they feel qualified. Now are producing a “template” to be adapted for each boat, one for power, one for sail.
8/20/16 Eye Sea Forever 5 5 3 4 4 Unfortunate that the gen failed on the 2nd day/first time we went to use it, but we got by with the inverter and grill for the duration.  The Dinghy struggles to get on plane with 2 people and desperately needs a spray deflector as it takes on so much water over the transom at speed that you have to stop and bail regularly.  See post trip notes for more detailed information I apologize for the genset failing. That's frustrating on a boat with electric stove! Ouch! Of course it is fixed, but I feel badly for you. Kudos on your attitude! Owners will need to address the spray and dinghy issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, we learned that rubbing a bar of soap on the sides of the floor sections elminates the sqeak. Will have freshly soaped for you next time!

8/22/16 Shenandoah 5 2 2 2 4 There was only one issue that caused my lower rating --- the severe sewage odor. Renewed strong odors occurred whenever  the head was used, or even when the head was pumped with no use. This boat should not be put out until fixed. My apologies. No excuse. We will solve. The maintenance pro found that a rare failure had caused the macerator to leak.  It has been replaced.  They are also checking the head hoses this winter to see if they are due for replacement.
8/22/16 Shenandoah 5 4 4 3 3 Disappointed about odor on the boat and not having anyone call me to discuss this despite multiple attempts on my side. Jon said he'd have Rick contact me. Danelle said Rick and Roger were out but they must be back by now. I want to hear from someone in authority what the policy is on this. I don't plan on chartering in the future if this is just something that I can expect randomly. I'm sorry. Head odors are obnoxious. Unfortunately, it isn't a quick fix out in the islands. We replace head hoses every 5 years and generally have this under control, but I'm sorry we didn't on your charter.  In this case the maintenance pro found that a rare failure had caused the macerator to leak.  It has been replaced.  They are also inspecting the head hoses this winter to see if they should be replaced.
8/25/16 Sea Eagle 4 4 2 4 4 Email sent to Danelle 9/7/16  As we reflected on our sailing cruise we wanted to share that we had a terrific time together cruising in many new and familiar places. I am curious on what you found out about the heater on Sea Eagle? We also appreciate your offer to consider a fair adjustment on the charter fee if after your investigation it is warranted. The boat worked well but with no heat , the extra day for repairs on the head waste lines (due to lack of planned maintenance) and a worn out bar-b-que, we did not think the boat lived up to San Jaun Sailing standards. Thanks again for your assistance.  Fair winds, Bill  A tiny battery in the thermostat had died, and that “weak link” in the system (new in 2011) was all it took to render Sea Eagle’s diesel cabin heater in-op. With a new battery, the heater works great again! Please accept our apologies and a $150 dinner credit for your next charter! Regarding the head hoses, the Maintenance Professional responsible for the boat sends his apologies. We trust you had a great morning in Roche Harbor, and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast we hosted, while the hoses were replaced. The BBQ was less than 2 years old. No previous charter guests had complained about it, but by the end of the season, it may have “given up the ghost”. New one installed!

8/26/16 Tug Time! 5 5 5 3 5 Pet hair was an issue with the vessel which was nearly impossible to completely get rid of. Otherwise, vessel was very good and we had an enjoyable trip.  The mattress in the forward berth was terrific!! Sorry abut the pet hair. Our experience with pets—allowed on with owner  approval—has been generally positive. But once in a rare while we get a shedder. Cleaners spend hours picking up those hairs. Sorry they didn't get them all for you.
8/26/16 Wave Dancer 5 5 4 3 5 This was a fantastic experience for us!!  We will be back after next year's "warm water" cruise. The boat had a couple condition issues that could be addressed to enhance the experience: new cushions in salon; better retention of the V-Berth interior panel forward (sags down and constricts the feet of the crew); headsail roller  furler comes out hard. Otherwise, great boat, we loved it! The staff was great, very professional on every encounter! Loved the skipper's meeting/briefing.  It did a very good job of preparing for the islands. You guys are definitely on our "recommend" list!  Thanks! Thank you VERY much for the specific encouragement.You make us work harder for you! The owners have ordered new cushions/upholstery for the salon which will be here in time for the 2017 charter season!

Tim fit right in with the family and was a joy to be with. Boat was perfect for comfort and amenities, hard to believe it was 20 years old. Suggestion...Since we had to be back early Friday (10:00 AM), it seems a bit heavy to charge for a full day Friday. Only issues were staff did not supply marine toilet paper, we bought some at store next to your office, plus floor in our head was dirty, we had to mop it.  We don't supply marine toilet paper,since it is not to be flushed down. Sorry about dirty floor in the head. That is unacceptable. Oh, we don't charge by the day, but “charter week” is from 9am Saturday to noon Friday.
9/2/16 Wind Song 5 3 5 5 5 The boat sailed really well, but he fridge is too small, and the anchoring system (including snubber) needs to be overhauled. 165' of rode is barely long enough for average conditions and certainly not long enough for moderate winds. There was no realistic way of attaching the secondary rode to the main one given that the caribner was too big for the main chain, and it's unreasonable to unshackle the bitter end on the main rode and attach there. Using a caribener to attach the 2 rodes also seems questionable.  Because we mostly anchor overnight, I wouldn't charter this boat again.  The anchoring technique/equipment can be a good discussion. For most coves, 100-125' of chain is adequate  (25' x 4). There are a few coves with deeper water and I appreciate the recommendation for ease of extending the rode for those exceptions. Good point on the caribiner.

9/2/16 Tivoli 5 3 1 4 5 Owners notes incomplete and with many errors. No inventory list. Didn't like German rigging. We had mechanical problems going out with bad alternator. Problems with autopilot.   Boat sails fast and well. Comfortable inside. Galley well furnished. Sails in good condition. Some vibration in rudder under power.  This was the first year of this boat in our program. It will be better this year than last. Will attend to you items. Thanks for listing them for us.
9/2/16 Tivoli 5 3 2 5 5 We had an alternator that didnt work and electronic  panel that fell off wall taking out the instruments. But SJS sent out mechanic who fixed us up and we had a great week. Tivoli sails great. Never got completely adjusted to the German rigging though.  All in all was another wonderful week in the islands.   Ouch! Attended to the items but sorry for the inconvenience.

After motoring for several hours we would anchor in the afternoon and, just using interior lights and occasionally the water pump, the batteries would reach the point of needing to be re-charged after only about three hours. It could have been a faulty battery monitor. Thank you very much for your feedback about Ardent.  Ardent's owner and maintenance team have installed a brand new house battery bank, starting battery, alternator, inverter/charger and charge meter for the 2017 season.

He got us calmed down and gave an excellent orientation to the navigation requirements and the basics of getting around the islands. Four stars for Bob. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat and the entire experience once we got settled in . The overall support from San Juan Yachting was good although we did have some frustration due to inability to reach anyone with some questions due to lack of cell phone and radio contact in some locations. We will be back!! Every year the cell phone coverage gets better in the islands, although it will depend upon your cell carrier. VHF I'm afraid is limited to the 26nm line of sight.
9/10/16 Cecelia 5 4 3 5 3 We were stuck at Friday Harbor for more than a day because your mechanic had knowingly installed the wrong-sized belt in the engine. Also, one of the oar locks in the dinghy was broken, making it difficult to row. On the other hand, the boat was spotless, and I got the impression that the company owners have a sincere devotion to good customer service. We apologize for the inconvenience. All boats carry spare belts and the primary belts are checked weekly on turnarounds. We erred in getting the right spare on board. Oarlocks are a sore spot with us because lesser quality ones break and that is very frustrating for guests. We recommend high quality dinghies and oars/oarlocks to the owners.

9/16/16 All Heart 3 4 3 5 4 We decided to stay in port on Sat. because of conditions.  When we decided to leave Sunday, the port engine would not start, that was a big surprise.  It had run on Sat.  There were problems with the stove from the begining.  The left burner never would light, we had to hold the dial down for a very long time for the right burner to stay lit.  Finally, the right burner would not stay lit when we tried to cook dinner the last night.  We tried to get the stove fixed on Sat. and Sunday before we left but got no cooperation.  That is to be expected, it was a weekend.  The stove should have been fixed before the charter.   Thankfully fixing the corroded wire connection to the starter on Sunday remedied the engine starting issue and it has not recurred. We are very sorry about your problems with the stove. The owners of "All Heart" are replacing the stove for the 2017 season.

9/17/16 Wind Song 5 4 5 5 5 The boat was very nice.  We had 2 issues.  1)  I expected full cockpit enclosure.  Instead the sides were open and given the weather on several of the days, it was very uncomfortable in the cockpit.  I may have missed or misunderstood the information on the boat when choosing one.  I will definitely choose a boat with full enclosure next time.  2)  The heads always smelled badly.  The problem may have been our improper or inconsistent use of the head.  We tried to keep some water in the bowl to serve as an odor trap.  However, the manual pump didn't quite work that way.  It would be nice to have the option of extra blankets.  But be assured we were very happy with our experience. Yes, you will want to look carefully for full enclosure boats. Few have them because most prefer open sides. We will check out the head situation. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your ideas and great attitude!
9/23/16 Sea Otter 5 5 4 5 5 Heater did not work, toilet holding tank had to be emptied more than once a day and there is no guage to tell you how full it is (you only know when you can't pump to flush the toilet), motor on dinghy was difficult to start. Also, there was no bucket or bailer on board. Apart from those things, a very enjoyable experience with this boat. Very clean and comfortable. Missing bucket is our bad. Standard equipment, sorry. Also sorry heater failed. We test regularly, maintain annually, and hate it when it fails anyway.

It has been our pleasure to provide that extra complimentary service for our guests during the peak season. Believe me...we talked about it and explored having it all the time. Marlene and I enjoy hosting the barbecue but during the spring and fall we are often gone, either leading sailing flotillas (like the month-long Broughton Islands flotilla this spring) or the travels we start about mid-September to see our children and sights. And, spring and fall are when a number of summer helpers are in school, and we don't have the people to host the BBQ in our absence. Days are also longer in the peak season, allowing time to enjoy the BBQ in the daylight and still get the essential checkouts done. A BBQ in the dark just doesn't have the same ambiance!

9/24/16 Florian 5 4 4 5 5 Very good safety class. Fairly complete check out of boat, though your employee had not been on Florian for a year and we all had to hunt for things that were not placed where the owner's notes said things should be. Boat had a few minor electrical and mechanical issues, but nothing to detract from the overall enjoyment of our cruise. Yes, inventory is a bit of a challenge each week, I'm afraid. Every guest finds a better place to store things than the previous one. We've pretty much given up on each thing having its own nook...that's why we suggest first thing when you board is to explore every crannie on the boat to find what is where. Thanks for the comments.

Holding tank is very small and pumping out is not easy.  RW filter is difficult to access under quarter berth.  Very comfortable boat but slow and difficult to dock. Cruises at only 5 knots under power @ 5300rpm.  In safety briefing a bit more info about customs would be helpful.  I managed to miss the piece of info that says you need to arrive at Friday Harbor customs by 5:00pm.  We arrived at 5:03pm and got a bit of an earful from the officer on the phone (we had to walk into town to visit the office) - it is still not clear to me what you would do if you arrived much later.  As always Canada customs were very courteous!  All in all a great experience - Thanks! Frankly, US Customs is much more courteous, overall (some exceptions) than formerly. I think they feel the security pressure and the occasional agent has difficulty handling absolute power gracefully.
9/24/16 Sea Otter 5 4 5 5 5 I wish there was a way to provide more privacy between head and the forward berth.  Vents in door let noise and odors into berth.  Also, toilet pump seemed very stiff and took many pumps to empty bowl.  Good workout, but all the activity wakes one up in the middle of the night! Here is a hint on a stiff toilet: put about a tablespoon of vegetable oil and flush it. Works marvels! We stock it in the head.
9/24/16 Sea Otter 4 4 4 4 5 It was hard to manage the sewage holding tank - only 14 gallons. It really needs a gauge to let you know the level, not just a full light. Yes, space limits the holding tank size. Unfortunately, gauges gunk up more quickly than the full lights. If you invent a reliable gunk-free gauge, you will be a millionaire!

9/24/16 Viva 5 3 5 5 5 Wonderful experience.  Only comment on the boat is that Viva does indeed have 6'2" of headroom in a small part of the interior but for the most part has very low overhead-especially the doorways.  I hit my head multiple times.  Otherwise it is a very nice 34 footer. Glad it was still a wonderful experience despite hitting your head!

The French (Jeanneau) apparently don’t drink while sailing…not even soft drinks. We’ll get portable drink holders which hang on lifelines.
