05/21/2013 04/27/2013 Raven, Catalina 42 5 5 4 5 5 The alternator belt was loose and should have been tightened before our departure.  The brand new satellite tv system was installed, but was never activated, and we would have liked to have used it. This was my fifth time aboard this boat from the time it was named Iliad to it's new name Raven. I really appreciate the improvements made to the boat, she's wonderful. I won't hesitate to charter her again.
05/22/2013 04/17/2013 Sea Eagle 5 5 5 5 5 The only thing we would change for next time is a little larger boat - we needed more room for sleeping.  Great trip - thanks to everyone who made it happen...

05/28/2013 05/18/2013 Liberty 5 5 5 5 5 San Juan Sailing is professional and attentive.  I always have a positive experience.  Thank you!
05/28/2013 05/17/2013 LeChateau 4 5 4 5 4 We were very impressed with the PDQ design and even more impressed with condition and cleanliness of the boat.
05/28/2013 05/18/2013 Argonaut 4 4 4 5 4 Overall a good experience, but there were some glitches: no "ports and passes" guide was onboard; northern charts tube had a chart missing; gas grill doesn't work properly, and one propane tank empty. Also, the boat came with a waste tank not empty and a water tank not full. We would never return a boat this way, and this is less than we expected from SJS.
05/28/2013 05/17/2013 Sundance 5 5 5 5 5 Boat ran great, easy to sail.  Enjoyed new sails and larger genoa.  Maybe add in the boat owner instructions that Aux 1 on the breaker panel turns on the DC plugs/ TV.  Maybe it says that already and I missed it.  Also there is no fire extinguisher in the V berth per the owner instructions, its in the aft starboard quarters.  Will charter again!
05/28/2013 05/17/2013 Salus 5 5 5 5 5 The boat was very well set up, and i particularly liked the great range of tools and spare parts, which enabled us to make a couple of minor repairs. I would check out the naoise from the prop shaft which occurred occasionally and which I, as a marine engineer in a previous lifetime, could not clearly identify.  If you need more info on this call me at 403-335-3139.

05/29/2013 05/22/2013 Kallisto 5 4 4 4 5 Need an egg flipper/spatula in the galley.  A couple of food storage containers?  Glad to see the greener products on board---thanks.
05/29/2013 05/18/2013 Cecilia 5 4 2 5 4 Due to the series of malfunctions on the boat (a non-functioning bilge pump, house lights that worked sporadically, weak house batteries resulting in the lack of power for pressurized water, heat, and refrigeration, a broken water hose leading to nearly complete loss of fresh water while we were far away from a fresh water source, a leaking v-berth hatch) it felt like we were spending a lot of time tending to problems or worrying about what problem would arise next.   Each problem that occurs has a consequence or multiple consequences that detract from the experience.  Many of the issues that came up during this cruise were preventable.  If you haven't already read my check-in form, please find it for more details.  Thanks, Kelvin Wing

07/01/2013 06/28/2013 Florian 5 5 5 5 5 Captain Len Northrup's excellent instruction provided myself and my son with the skills required to Pilot the Florian throughout the San Juan Islands. Best value for the cost of a vacation that I have ever encountered. I want to learn more about boating and plan on using the services of San Juan Yachting's great personnel. World Class Equipment, Outstanding Organization. Thanks for a Great Vacation.  Captain Mark W. Stewart  Southwest Airlines
07/01/2013 06/22/2013 Esprit de Mer 4 5 5 5 5 We stayed aboard Friday night. We did not need a full check out because we had a captain coming on Saturday, but it would have been helpful if someone had at least shown us the basics of the boat Friday afternoon.
07/02/2013 06/21/2013 Catspaw 4 4 5 5 4 A tremendous week.  I'll be back next year.
07/02/2013 06/22/2013 Raven 5 4 4 5 5 All boat information that was pre-filled in top half of Customs Worksheet was very helpful.  I suggest to edit the lower half boxes "For Each Person Aboard" to read "Passport Name:" and add another item under Passport # to read "Expiration Date:"  Thank you!
07/03/2013 06/20/2013 Sea Eagle 5 4 3 5 5 You should really change the chain for the anchor. It is way to big (thick) to operate smootly. The rest of the boat works like a charm except for the mainsail furling which is rather hard work to operate.

07/06/2013 06/22/2013 Kallisto 5 5 5 5 5 A retractable bimini would be nice for some shade.  SHS preparation for Canadian and US Customs was top notch.  Consider drilling weep holes in the bottom of Chart Plotter gasketted housings so the inevitable water intrusion can drain instead of ponding up.  This happened on the last 2 boats I was on (talk to Dave about Kipper Kite).  Why to macerators, thru-hull seacocks and fresh water tank valves always have to be so awkwardly located?   Kallisto seems overpowered in 16 knot winds and rounds up quickly in a gust.  Is her Genoa the right size for normal cruising?  All little stuff aside, we had a superb experience yet again with SJS.  Keep it up.
07/08/2013 06/22/2013 Argonaut 5 5 4 5 5 Safety briefing was excellent and I'm glad almost all of the crew attended. Minor issues: some of the paper communications beforehand could have been clearer. E.g. explain safety philosophy and make clear that you want skipper to designate a *separate* NSO (practice makes total sense; we just did not glean this from the written materials). Use of the phrase "charter guest" is a little confusing, e.g. when you say safety briefing is "mandatory for every charter guest" -- do you mean all passengers on the boat, or only the charterer of record?    Owner's guide is a terrific resource.
07/09/2013 06/28/2013 Puffin 5 5 4 5 5 Boat was beautiful and in very good condition.  Only problem, which we fixed ourselves the first day, was a leak where the water line joined the galley faucet.  The hose clamp was not at the nipple, but below, squeezing the hose and leaking.  We noticed the bilge pump cycling on every few minutes and that alerted us to look for a leak.  Fortunately we discovered it our first day out and traced the leak down and fixed it.  We did not loose significant fresh water and had more than a half a tank when we finished our charter.  Thank you for providing well provisioned took kit to provide us with the correct screw driver to fix the clamp. All else was perfect and Puffin is a beautiful sailing and cruising boat and very comfortable.   Only other issue is we could never find the white cable above the nav desk to connect our MP3 or IPod to the stereo system.  Thanks again.  Regards, Norman Plotkin
07/09/2013 06/29/2013 Slipstream 5 4 4 5 5 Question 2: found the anchor chain of only 50 feet (rest was rope line) to be a limitation in the busier bays due to the resulting wider swing radius than boats around us with full chain rodes.  Question 3: waste water tank gauge did not work, but managed ok.  In hindsight I think the fuel gauge was off also as the gauge showed half full, but on fueling had to add much more than half the tank capacity stated in the owners notes.
07/10/2013 06/29/2013 Wave Dancer 5 4 4 5 5 Did a one week Learn and Cruise with Clint Najera on Chinook.  Both Clint and Chinook were fantastic.  Followed it by a one week cruise chartering Wave Dancer.  First day we had Leslie Senn, who was also a first rate teacher.  Wave Dancer is a great little boat, handles well and sails well into the wind.  Doesn't run, broad reach is the best she'll do downwind.  Jibing can be a bit tricky as she only has two winches, and we had trouble with the dinghy outboard and the windlass breaker.  Rick, Danelle, Jeni and the whole San Juan staff are EXTREMELY kind and professional.  This is the place to come in the US for coastal cruising.  Highly recommended.
07/10/2013 06/29/2013 Tsirku 5 5 5 5 5 My wife and two kids and I had an amazing time.  We absolutely fell in love with Tsirku, finding her a very solid and comfortable boat, and when put to the wind, she performed in every way.  I want one.  Danelle, our contact at San Juan was awesome--extremely helpful and friendly during check in and out.  This was our first time chartering with your company and I was very impressed with every aspect of our experience.  Thanks for a really great time.  We'll be back for more next year.

07/16/2013 07/03/2013 Florian 5 5 5 5 5
07/16/2013 07/05/2013 Kingfisher 5 5 5 5 5 The boat was great--very well kept. I'd like to see a little more on the davit operation. Even with the photos in the owners notes, we puzzled over how to raise the arm for a bit. A QR card on the electrical panels would be useful--showing switch settings for getting underway, for example (engine controls on, horn on, electronics on, etc)., and for at anchor operation and connected at the dock.Every panel in every boat is different. A quick reference card would save time keep someone from running out the batteries.
07/17/2013 07/05/2013 slipstream 5 5 5 5 5 The only major change I would suggest is putting larger motors on the dinghies. They are fine for getting to and from the boat to the dock but if there is much current they can be quite underpowered. If a guest wishes to go fishing or exploring it is almost impossible with such a small motor. A small anchor for the dinghy would also be a nice feature. The sailboat itself is nicely appointed.
07/17/2013 07/05/2013 Wave Dancer 5 5 4 4 5 The on-line cruising guide was very helpful for planning our trip prior to our arrival.

07/22/2013 07/13/2013 One World 5 4 4 5 Ditch the "Sea Shepard" flag.
07/22/2013 07/12/2013 Argonaut 5 5 4 5 5 There were some alarms that were not fully functional.    Also the safety equipment should be reviewed by the checkout person with the entire crew as should the use of the life sling. Gettin someone back in would be a challange.

07/23/2013 07/13/2013 Hawthorne Bay 4 4 4 3 4 I thought the safety meeting was well done. I did not get much out of the meeting that followed for new charter guest.
07/23/2013 07/12/2103 Aspen Fun III 4 4 5 5 5 There was an electrical glitch when both bow and stern thrusters were used simulaneously; the electronics powered on and off and the inverter alarm in the berth sounded.   Also there was no shower curtain.    We did have to search a bit for an inverter to charge our cell phone - is the only one in the berth?  This could be clearer in the manual.  All in all it is a great boat for 2 people for a week.  The fuel economy was excellent - we burned 55 gal in about 22 hours of motoring during the week.  I figured we covered about 210 nm, so we were averaging under 3 gph,, and just under 4 nmpg.  This is really impressive.  It also handles well in pretty rough, steep waves encountered in Padilla and Bellingham Bays.

07/23/2013 07/13/2013 Chinook 5 5 5 5 5 You guys are awesome. I think one example sums it up. We forgot Saran wrap and there was none on board. One of your staff tried to find some for us but said she couldn't find any. Later on Friday evening, she dropped by the boat with some Saran wrap. She obviously remembered our request and kept looking. I know it was a small gesture, but it was indicative of your attention to detail and your efforts to make our charter a great experience.
07/23/2013 07/12/2013 Tug Time! 4 4 4 5 4 Getting fuel and using the pumpout was the last experience of the trip.  Both were highly congensted, it is right in the main traffic channel and the wind there both leaving and arriving was strong so assume it is like that most summer days.   The set-up should be modernized.  Our holding tank was full and ripe when we picked up the boat, staff could double check this and if not emptied could do this prior to the arrival of the next user.  Low oil pressure alarm continued to go off.  In the briefing, a fair amount of time was spent on the top-10 places guests hit rocks. At the conclusion I could not tell you one place, my wife couldn't either.  Its unfamiliar waters with maps flashed at you.  Skip this part as it drags the meeting out.  The map is in each bathroom as stated, that's good enough.    Overall a very good charter, boat was clean and worked fine other than a few small items.  I would recommend your business to another.    Cheers
07/23/2013 07/12/2013 Free Spirit 4 4 5 5 4 Something needs to be done to assure that charter guests are assured a better experience with the freezer/refrigerator.
07/24/2013 07/06/2013 Aspen Fun 4 5 5 5 5
07/24/2013 07/13/2013 Sea Eagle 5 5 4 5 5 Overall, Sea Eagle is a good handling boat and sails well, although getting used to a lack of primary winches was a bit challenging..  She's a snap to dock, even under tough conditions.  We were impressed by her easy speed under power.  We believe the raw water uptake could be improved by elimination of the corrugated, long plumbing up to the strainer.  Rick knows that simultaneous use of the water pump and shower sump pump didn't work (let folks know that the shower drain is difficult, as water collects to port, away from the drain), but forgot to tell him the small stove burner failed to light.  The ground tackle is great!  Available equipment is adequate.  A very enjoyable charter!
07/24/2013 06/21/2013 Sundance 4 3 3 3 4 It was our first charter experience and first time sailing in the San Juans.  All in all we had a great experience, and I thought SJS did a good job in prepping us for the week.  Going with the ASA flotilla was helpful, being our first time.  Checkin at the end of the trip was rather hectic.  Could use more information and/or checklist for how the boat should be returned.  What to do with garbage, leftover food, etc. Will be back...
07/25/2013 07/05/2013 Argonaut 5 5 4 5 5
07/25/2013 07/13/2013 Wave Dancer 5 5 4 4 5 We had this boat before, 2 years ago.  Like the set up.  There were a couple of wear and tear issues that come with use, (ie the anchor light was intermittent).  The staff was great as always.    Just one thought as a way to promote your business, is a photo contest.  You could post the better photos on your web site and let prospective clients get a better feel for the area and promote more loyalty among return guest.
07/28/2013 07/06/2013 Grey Goose 4 5 5 5 5 All the staff was very helpful.  The one comment on this subject is that our checkout person was not very familiar with the Grey Goose and several questions were left unanswered as to the operation of the boat; although, none of it was critical.       Comments to embellish the Owner's Notes have been sent via separate email to Jon and the owner.
07/29/2013 07/19/2013 Hawthorne Bay 5 5 5 5 5 Given when I checked out. All minor except the heads.
07/29/2013 07/20/2013 Raven 5 5 5 5 5 Raven has a sad little dinghy, but other than that, fantastic boat! Lots of extras like deck chairs and multiple binoculars. Nice!
07/29/2013 07/19/2013 esprit de mir 5 4 5 5 5 The boat and service were great. Thanks

07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Island Escape 5 4 5 5 5 While not the fastest in the fleet, Island Escape is comfortable and easy to sail even while parenting three young boys. We had a great week, and can't wait to come back.
07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Sapphire 5 4 5 5 5 Very approachable and staff was extremely knowledgeable of boat and cruising area...this is very helpful when we had never been in this area before
07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Hula Kai 5 5 4 5 5 We were too excited to get started. Let folks know they are on vacation slow down, Remind them they are on island time.
07/30/2013 07/19/2013 Catspaw 5 3 5 5 5 Reviews/comments from past customers regarding the specific boat on your website was very useful!!!
07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Firefly 5 2 3 5 5 Boat worked well , but some new equipment on this boat not fully functional, and some not installed (e.g. wind speed/direction). Very small aft berth and galley
07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Morning Light 5 4 5 5 5 Mark did a great job checking us out and answering all questions.  He was very responsive and checked back with us 3 times to make sure that everything was taken care of to our satisfaction.
07/30/2013 07/20/2013 Escape 4 5 5 5 5 Would so it again in a minute!!  Clint Najera was terrific!
08/01/2013 07/20/2013 Sea Eagle 5 3 4 5 4
08/01/2013 07/20/2013 ASPEN FUN III 5 5 4 5 5 The boat ran great.      I would suggest a diver check the bottom and clean it if necessary - I pulled 3 inches of grass of the waterline in the stern which is why I only gave 4 stars ...    This is by far the best charter experience my wife and I have ever had.  The Aspen Fun III was outfitted superbly - more that I would expect from any charter boat owner.      It handled the Strait of Georgia like a champ, although water was flying over the boat my wife never had any concern about her safety, I would not have attempted that trip across the Strait in my 25 foot Bayliner.      We would definitely charter this boat again!
08/02/2013 07/13/2013 catspaw 3 4 5 5 5 Checkout very poor, didn't know much about the boat which ended being misleading and even dangerous, for example, pointed out to the wrong breaker as the windlass one, which I had to figure out in the worst possible moment.  The boat was great. Not a sleek easy going as a Caribbean charter, but good enough for an experienced skipper to figure out.
08/04/2013 07/19/2013 Sundance 5 5 5 5 5 Our second charter with SJS was as professional and well-orchestrated as our first one 3 years ago.  Look for our early booking for next season; we are thinking about chartering *Argonaut* for a 2-week cruise into Canada.....  Many thanks, and rest assured that our trimline self-inflating life vests will all be fully tested by next summer.  The not-so-cold waters of Inati Bay were prefect for testing LIz's vest for the first time; I will soon be jumping in the cool but tolerable waters of Black Lake to test my own vest sometime in August.        In any event, thanks for yet another smooth and safe chartering experience.  I really appreciate the detailed briefing you gave to all of us--and the NSO cap you gave to our "Number Ones".  Liz wears the cap every time we go out on our Catalina 22, *Ellipsis.*.
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 Koa Lanai 5 5 4 5 5 There should be a Six Star rating for the boat, and the mechanical issue was easily compensated for.
08/07/2013 07/26/2013 Florian - Nordic Tug 32 5 5 5 5 5 excellently run charter company. everyone was helpful accommodating and friendly. The boat was well appointed and very comfy. The BBQ on Friday night was a wonderful and very appreciated treat  after a long day of travel, provisioning and loading the boat prior to our holidays.
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 Saphire 4 5 4 5 5 Problems first day out with the chart plotter, stove burners, outboard motor oil level, could not locate inflatable pump. See check out notes.  Were you able to find a pump on board? It was needed.  thanks George...
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 Cecilia 4 4 2 3 4 Everyone is very nice and helpful. Cecilia had some issues: full head upon arrival, broken water pump, broken anchor. We gladly would have given five stars to everything if these issues had not arisen.
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 RAVEN 5 5 4 5 5 Simple surveys cannot capture the appreciation we TRENDLERs have for Marlene & Roger and the entire SJS staff - we've been beneficiaries of their attention and thoughfulness many times since our first charter with 'you' in 1985. All good wishes, Cap'n Carl
08/07/2013 07/19/2013 Catspaw 5 5 5 5 5 Don't change anything.  Just keep doing it again.  Thank you for a wonderful experience!!
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 Kallisto 5 4 4 4 5 This was my first charter with SJS. You guys are so professional, friendly, and well organized. I was so impressed! My first impression of this was at the Boat Show. Every interaction I had just confirmed it. We really loved the boat, too. We'll be back!!
08/07/2013 07/27/2013 Wave Dancer 5 4 3 4 4 In general this boat had several significant problems with a non-functioning radio mic, broken piece in port windlass, frayed jib ropes, a defect in the main in-haul, foul odor (more than normal) in the head.  We liked our experience and we would charter again but we might avoid this boat and check key functional and  safety items more carefully before we sail next time.  I think a radio check should be a mandatory part of the checkout every time.
08/08/2013 07/26/2013 Tsirku 5 5 4 5 5 We had a very nice week.  I hope we can do it again some day.  The boat was clean and very sturdy.  Improved instructions on the head would be good (importance of locking toilet, macerator procedure clarification).  Sail cover at end of boom interfered with reefing system which was a hassle.  Probably not hard to fix so hopefully someone will do this.  Overall I would recommend both San Juan Sailing and this boat as well.  It is not a new boat but it is a nice one.

08/09/2013 07/27/2013 Illumine 5 4 3 5 4 I have chartered extensively over the past 40 years, and this was my fourth charter with your company.  I have been consistently impressed with your staff and the excellent condition of your boats.  I liked everything about Illumine except for the in-mast furling system on the main sail.  This is very difficult to unfurl and furl.  This took much of the fun out of the sailing because we were reluctant to bring out the main.
08/16/2013 08/02/2013 Hula Kai 5 3 4 5 5 Boat sailed great, but was difficult to guide around tight marinas and probably had too much "gear" on it for this type of charter (generator, water maker, AC, etc.). Big, heavy boat.
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 One World 5 5 5 5 5 Fantastic trip thanks to SJS!  As usual, the San Juan Sailing team was friendly and helpful!!!   Suggestion: As an option, it would be nice to allow the sailboats to refuel at Rosario Resort.  At Blakely, it was not a problem for us, there was about a 40 minute wait to be able to dock for refueling. A couple of boats had issues docking and leaving due to the heavy current and not having their boat heading into the current.  The great part is that all of the SJS sailors helped each other out! ;-)  Thanks again for another year of fun cruising in the San Juans!  Bruce Smith
08/16/2013 08/02/2013 Chinook 4 5 5 5 5 Best charter experience I've ever had.
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 Sea Otter 5 5 5 5 5 Safety and navigation briefing was outstanding.  Having never sailed in the PNW it was invaluable and made me much more comfortable leaving the dock.  On board checkout was also extremely detailed and we were very familiar with the operation of the boat.  Sea Otter is a fully found blue water cruising boat and was extremely comfortable.  Refrigerator/freezer and dry storage were over sized and important in our cruise as we only spent one night at the dock.
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 Morning Light 5 3 1 3 3 The boat is not receiving the maintenance it needs, this was our 4th year with San Juan, and we have always had a great experience.  This last one, not so much.  However, we will do it again.
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 Liberty 5 5 4 5 5 Electronics needs to be booted up in correct order for proper function, owner should note location of additional cushions for additional berth in main cabin. Loved the boat and renting through SJS!  Thanks  Scott
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 HELE MAI 5 5 5 5 5 One thing I forgot to mention is that the gas grill may need a new regulator valve.  The HELE MAI has been maintained to an impeccable standard.  A lovely vessel.  Our trip could not have been even 1% better.  A peak experience.
08/16/2013 08/02/2013 Slipstream 5 5 4 5 5 The markings for length of chain and rode should be clear they wear out with use, so the need to be renewed...would like "dividers" the two pointed tool for in the Nav table....and some "Vim" on board for cleaning scufs and spills
08/16/2013 08/02/2013 Grey Goose 5 4 5 5 5 I have chartered 7 or 8 times with other companies, with a full range of other boats and this was by far the best overall experience and the best equipped boat.  In hindsight, our eagerness to be out on the water, was a conflict with learning the workings of the complete array of modern equipment on Grey Goose.   We could have used a more knowledgeable, organized review of the many systems  and equipment.  But now that we have spent much of the week  really learning the "workings" of Grey Goose, she will be even more enjoyable next time.  I do plan to contact American Tug in La Conner and remind them that all their customers are not all athletes, over 5'8".  The boat badly needs better placed hand-holds to get aboard both fore and aft  -  especially when the swim step is  lost to a large dinghy and davit system.
08/16/2013 08/03/2013 Mariah 5 4 5 5 5 The whole Skipper and NSO checklist process was very helpful.  It was far ahead of our experience with Moorings in the BVI. It got us up to speed with our boat before we ever left the dock.  We'll be back.
08/16/2013 08/02/2013 Esprit de Mer 5 5 5 3 5 We had a great time, great boat.  Look forward to next years charter.
08/17/2013 08/02/2013 Sapphire 5 5 5 5 5 A great boat, a great staff and a great charter experience!
08/17/2013 08/03/2013 MARIAH 5 5 5 5 5 We were extremely pleased with the charter.  We are highly recommending San Juan Sailing & Yachting. We all felt that your information meetings on Friday night were excellent and done in an enjoyable format. The NSO is very good. We were checked out by Hal on Saturday morning and he was great! We are sailors who were checking out the "dark side" for our future ( I think we just accelerated our timetable...it was sooo easy!).  We loved the pilot house on Mariah and commend it's owner (and SJS&Y) for the attention to detail. We visited Blind Bay, Bedwell Harbour, Victoria, Roche, Reid Harbor and Echo Bay on Sucia .  Beautiful!!  Thanks for making our first (and not the last ) experience so PERFECT!  The Tylers

08/19/2013 08/02/2013 Mariah 5 5 5 5 5 San Juan Yachting is an exceptional organization.  The attention to detail, the professionalism always tempered with a sense of humor!  Just extraordinary.
08/19/2013 08/03/2013 Kipper Kite 5 3 3 5 5 Tight accommodations for 7 adults plus stove, toilet and stereo problems created some inconvenience. Nonetheless, we thoroughly enjoyed our charter experience.
08/19/2013 08/03/2013 Hele Mai 5 5 5 5 5 Wonderful boat with great attention to all amenities needed for a fabulous trip!
08/19/2013 08/03/2013 Kipper Kite 5 3 3 4 5 We had problems with the stove and, also, toilet in the master stateroom.  Also, some flatware was missing as we only had 4 dinner forks for 7 people.  The boat was crowded for 7 people.  However, the overall experience was great.  The boat sailed well and we had an excellent instructor.
08/19/2013 08/09/2013 Kipper Kite 5 4 4 3 4 Great time as always. You folks run a high quality operation. Kipper Kite was a great boat for two families.    Two comments:    1) Significant head smell in the forward head. Much stronger than anything we've seen with you before. Everything else was spotless as usual.    2) For people taking kayaks especially, I would emphasize the need to deploy the boarding ladder.  If someone messes up the transition between kayak and swim step, they are not getting back aboard without either that ladder or lots of help.  We covered it in the checkout brief, but I didn't really recognize the significance until later.     PS: A thank you to the school skipper on Hale Kai who gave us a VHF call  while we were all waiting for the fog in Rosario to lift.
08/19/2013 08/09/2013 Shell-y-t 4 4 3 4 4 seemed like the diesels could use servicing, one had low oil pressure and tended to smoke,  the other had problems charging the battery
08/19/2013 08/09/2013 Stardust 5 4 4 5 4 Fuse for inverter was blown when we started, before we ever used it.  No replacement on the boat.  Wasted two days attempting to get it resolved.  Staff was very helpful.  Windlass design on that boat is dangerous.   Chain jumps off track every time   the anchor is retreived.  Nearly lost a finger in that thing
08/20/2013 08/09/2013 Eye Sea Forever 5 4 4 5 5 I sent a separate e-mail regarding detailed suggestions.  Only reason gave 4 star instead of 5 star is we had a problem with the shower drain and sump pump early on, but eventually resolved it with some advice from SJY.  Also, we'd prefer a boat with a propane stove and diesel furnace, so the generator wasn't needed as much.  Boat was beautiful though!
08/20/2013 08/18/2013 Chinook 5 5 5 5 5 Due to a sudden family emergency, my usual crew was unable to sail with me.  On short notice, Roger took me and my completely novice replacement crewman out for the 1 hour complimentary docking and maneuvering update; he generously turned it into an over 3 hour private sailing clinic that gave us both the skills and confidence to venture into the Sound. Thank you Roger and San Juan Sailing for yet another great charter experience. See you next year!

08/20/2013 08/09/2013 Salus 5 5 5 5 5 Our experience was outstanding. Salus was an absolute pleasure to sail, and comfortable for six adults and a teenager. Everything worked without a hitch; it was the most trouble-free charter we've ever experienced. This was due not only to the excellent condition of Salus (our favorite boat so far), but also the helpful tips in the skipper/NSO meeting and the thorough checkout information (plus the 25 pages of owner's notes). The Friday evening BBQ hosted by Roger and Marlene was an especially nice touch. We look forward to chartering with SJS again in the near future.
08/20/2013 08/09/2013 Liberty 5 5 5 5 5 Liberty is very well equip ie tools spare parts, hoses filters. The boat sailed well the furling system worked perfect  I think the auto pilot needs to be re calibrated when set it turns about 10% to port
08/20/2013 08/03/2013 Stardust 5 4 5 5 5 Always a pleasure to charter with SJS/SJY!
08/20/2013 08/10/2013 Raven 5 4 4 4 5 Our 7th charter with San Juan Sailing and we still remain impressed with the overall service offered by the entire staff.  Thank you for such a great experience.  Bill Badgley
08/21/2013 08/02/2013 Esprit de mer  4 4 3 2 4 I LOVED our experience with you and will rent again from you. I think you need to know the boat did not feel super clean. Paperwork left on board from previous charter and some food-apple and candy.  The master bedroom is really nice but I think the foam pad on the bed needs to be tossed. One too many bodies have slept on it.  Plus the waterproof mattress pad seemed to not be clean and it makes EVERYBODY sweat.  I say no to waterproof mattress pads:). Thanks for asking.
08/21/2013 08/16/2013 Joie de Vivre 5 5 4 4 5 Dinghy launching was a learning experience.  The dinghy had exhaust dirt and was small for 4 guests.  Accomodations were great.  Fly bridge canvas was not openable and there were not tools to help ( pliers).  It made conversation difficult when anchoring.
08/21/2013 08/10/2013 joie de viere 4 4 2 5 4 you should tell people to bring cd's if they want music .poor entertainment system on boat
08/21/2013 08/09/2013 Escape 5 5 4 5 5 Provided at check-in; thanks!
08/21/2013 08/10/2013 Seas the Dream 5 5 5 5 5 Hopefully that have fixed the ceiling falling down in the forward V-Berth
08/23/2013 08/10/2013 Tug Time 4 4 2 4 3 Problem with holding tank and macerator pump caused delay in departing and 1+ day layover in Ganges to get fixed.  Meant we couldn't go to Desolation and had to stay in Gulf Islands.
08/23/2013 08/09/2013 Wave Dancer 2 3 4 2 Randy did our checkout and he seemed less familiar with the boat than I was. Checkout took 1.5 hrs. Roger was helpful at finally resolving the worst of our mechanical problems. There were enough problems with the boat that our overall experience was frustrating. We will look into other companies for our next charter.
08/23/2013 08/10/2013 Misty Blue Yonder 5 5 5 5 5 It was a completely magical experience. My whole family including our three kids loved it, and my wife and I are now obsessed with sailing and living on a boat! My sister and her husband were our skippers, but showed us the ropes and now we're looking forward to learning to sail. The Misty Blue Yonder's layout and accommodations were perfect for our group!! Thank you!!
08/23/2013 08/10/2013 Firefly 5 4 3 5 4 Would have really preferred to know the holding tank pump was almost useless.  Need to address electrical issue with instruments/plotter.
08/24/2013 08/02/2013 Sea's the Dream 5 5 5 5 5 Paula was particularly helpful on Friday evening and spent a lot of time with us during check out.  We've been chartering for a few years and San Juan Sailing has been one of our best experiences.

08/27/2013 08/17/2013 Slipstream 5 5 5 5 5 The boat was very comfortable and clean.  Enjoyed the experience very much.  It was a well balanced boat under sail.  The helm was light which was very good for new sailor/helmsman(women) that I taught.
08/27/2013 08/16/2013 Grey Goose 4 5 5 4 5
08/27/2013 08/16/2013 Oneworld 5 5 5 5 5 We all had a great time - lots of open water sailing - Oneworld was a pleasure to skipper.  Thank you, Dave Stormont
08/28/2013 08/16/2013 First kiss 4 5 5 5 5 Fantastic boat!   Really the only issue we had was the size of the dinghy.  For a boat that carries so many people the dinghy was too small.  The other facet was that  the size of the boat means you can't use moor, so you have to anchor out, which was typically farther from shore. So there was lots of dinghy runs back and forth. Larger dinghy would be very much appreciated. But it was a fantastic Boat and we had a great time!
08/28/2013 08/17/2013 Puffin 5 4 4 5 4 Wonderful boat. Very comfortable solon, and it's fast with 10+ knot winds. Bow thruster is very useful. Stiff and dry. Owners notes are excellent and complete. No surprises. SJS charter is also excellent. Thanks!
08/29/2013 08/17/2013 Escape 5 4 4 5 5 We enjoyed the boat and the assistance by staff. Equally, appreciated how will your staff handled a maintenance problem. Mechanic was professional,  timely, friendly, and knowledgeable. Roger and other staff concerned about us. The arrival check in process/boarding could be improved. We will recommend San Juan Sailing to our friends.
08/29/2013 08/12/2013 Saphire 5 5 4 5 4 we had GPS prblems from the start of the charter and these were not resolved during our trip
08/29/2013 08/09/2013 Kingfisher 5 5 5 5 5 Everything seemed very well organized from the moment we found our name on the board to the moment we drove away at the end of our trip.  The one thing that seemed "without protocol" was our on-boat orientation.  I think a boat-specific orientation that followed a check list of sorts would be much more helpful then someone jumping on board and asking us what questions we had.  This was our first charter and I'm sure next time I would have a better idea what kinds of questions to ask but it felt unorganized.  Ultimately Wes and Tim returned the next morning to answer a few more of our questions and we pulled away feeling like we knew 80% of what we should know.  Reading the owner's notes and the handouts for the skipper and NSO were very helpful and did produce a good list of questions that we went over with Tim.  I just think a bow to stern over view would be great for first time charterers.
09/02/2013 08/17/2013 Tsirku 4 5 4 4 4 Nice boat.
09/02/2013 08/23/2013 Firefly 5 5 4 5 5 Diesel heater and macerator did not work.
09/02/2013 08/24/2013 Puffin 5 5 4 5 5 had a minor electrical glitch that could not have been predicted and it was corrected by maintenance staff (Parker) coming out at night to trouble shoot and correct the problem. excellent customer service

09/02/2013 08/26/2013 Free Spirit 5 5 5 5 5 We loved our experience and the boat!
09/03/2013 08/23/2013 Sease the Dream 5 4 3 4 5 Constant beeping from the low battery was a nuisance.
09/03/2013 08/23/2013 Esprit de Mer 5 4 3 4 4 When we chartered this boat it was advertised to have a generator and water maker on board.  When we got there, we found out that the generator was removed and the water maker was not working.  The chart plotter/radar at the helm was not working and needed to be replaced with a smaller version chart plotter which was not interfaced with the radar or autohelm.  We also experienced an engine problem while at sea.  The staff at SJS was extremely friendly and helpful in every way.
09/03/2013 08/24/2013 Wave Dancer 5 3 2 5 4 We had a good experience overall. However, the issue with the transmission, leaky stuffing box, and quirky windless made things a bit more stressful than we would have liked.
09/03/2013 08/24/2013 Raven 5 4 2 4 3 Check PFD's make sure CO2 cartage present and have spears on board.  One of ours was missing and no spears on board.  No Radio had to use hand radio.  Aft head pump out broken.  Boat should have both fixed and hand for safety. Hand one for dingy for safety.     The person using the PFD with missing cartage on the first day didn't know how to swim.  Lucky I found it was missing the first night. This gave that person a bad feeling the whole trip about the safety of the charter company and their boat.
09/04/2013 08/24/2013 Sea's the Dream 5 3 3 5 4 fouled bottom, slowed boat down.  also instructions for sound system weren't sufficiently clear.
09/08/2013 08/17/2013 Raven 5 4 4 5 5 Our VHF radio went down half way through the trip but was replaced quickly and the problem was taken care of! Thanks!
09/16/2013 08/23/2013 Island Escape 5 5 5 5 5 This was an absolutely fantastic trip, beautiful and our whole experience was the best.

09/16/2013 08/29/2013 Tug Time 5 4 5 5 5 Really enjoyed the experience again, after several years off. Everyone very helpful, enjoyed the boat very much. Owners have right to be proud of their boat.

09/16/2013 08/30/2013 Krogen 58 4 5 4 5 5 Overall excellent experience!  Relatively minor points...The initial greeting upon our arrival was a tad "distracted."  The depth gauge did not work beyond about 60 feet.  And the outboard kept giving us alarms.  We had a great time!
09/16/2013 08/30/2013 OneWorld 5 5 5 5 5 OneWorld is a remarkable boat.  Sails well and is easier to dock than a monohull.  Checking out and checking in was very efficient.  We enjoy our chartering experiences with San Juan Sailing!
09/16/2013 08/31/2013 Island Escape 5 4 4 5 5 I've always said that if all businesses ran as smoothly as Rental Car Companies life would go alot smoother! You company is top notch and a well oiled machine! You've deserved every award you have received! Thanks and we'll be back!
09/16/2013 08/30/2013 SALUS 5 5 5 5 5 I have several commentsand suggestions that I conveyed to Rodger prior to our embarcation and durng our stay at ROCHE Harbor;  1.  The Marine Life oriientation was not included due to the absence of the resenter due to a personal issue.  As a result the actual orentation session did not start until 4:30 PM. as opposed to 4:00 PM as originally scheduled.  Participants were not notified of the change in format and therefore remained in the conference room.  In the future, I suggest either to start the orientation session earlier (in spite of the fact that boats may not be ready for boarding) OR inform everyone that the time of the session has changed.  Either way, gives more time to prepare for the week. The Marine life presentation is valuable so I presume this situation will not re-occur anytime soon;  2.  Each NSO received a hat BUT the Captain was excluded. In 2012, the Captain did receive a hat.   The explanation given was that 2012 was an anniversary year and celebratory in nature.  Although generous, I am of the oipinion that both the designated  Captain and NSO persons are of equal importance and should be recognized as such.  It is healthy to enforce the improtance of both and a good marketing tool to distribute the hats to both; the additional cost of one hat is relatively insignificant as compared to the benefit to all.  I also believe this will boost sales (although not intended) as the rest of the crew will want hats!;  3.  We had a mishap in ROCHE HARBOR that was reported to Rodger.  A crew member (subsequently keel hauled in 62 degree water) added water to the DIESEL FUEL TANK!  The mishap was quickly and successfully abated without any further damage.  After emptying and cleaning the tank,  it was recommended by the mechanic to check all of the exisitng filters.  Upon inspection, it was noted that the separation  filter contained an inordinate amount of water that had NO RELATIONSHIP to the mishap and was a preexisitng condition.  Upon review of the vessel's mechanical/engine check list, it was either erroneously reported that all filters had been checked OR there was in fact a mechanical problem exisitng prior to our mishap.  We are aware, that SALUS was chartered immediately preceding our charter.  According to the mechanic, it was fortuitious that the filters were checked and replaced prior to continuing the charter;   4.  Suggested that the WATER and DIESEL access ports are colored coded.  SALUS has one water port coded blue BUT niether the second water port or the DIESEL port are color coded and look identical in spite of the specifc designation in writing; and as a final note/suggestion  5.  As you may recall, the change machine for the showers was out of order and therefore people were running about looking for change.  Yes, aware of the sign on the machine and San Juan Yacht charter is not responsible for maintaining the facilities, it would have been helpful at the end of orientation that effort should be made to secure change (quarters only) if in need of a shower prior to departure.      May be back next year with another crew of people!  Bruce M. Topolosky

09/16/2013 08/31/2013 Grey Goose 5 5 5 4 5 This was the first time we have chartered a boat and it was an exerience that will not soon be forgotten.  We had such a wonderful time and will definitely be doing this again.  Likely requesting the same boat.  We loved everything about it.
09/16/2013 09/06/2013 Hula Kai 5 4 4 4 5 In addition to the end of charter comments, I would like to add that the boat is set up well for four people except the dinghy is under-powered and only rated for three people.
09/17/2013 08/31/2013 Chinook 5 4 4 5 5 Great trip
09/17/2013 09/07/2013 Misty Blue Yonder 5 5 4 5 5 We thoroughly enjoyed our time on Misty Blue Yonder.  We first chartered with SJS over 15 years ago and you have continually impressed us with your attention to detail. The Skippers meeting, the on-board briefing and check-out all contributed to leaving the dock with confidence.  The boat sailed nicely, the lines easily managed and navigation was a breeze with the helm-mounted chart plotter.  We felt comfortable sailing or motoring.  The bow thruster helped to maneuver her in docking situations.  The crew also loved the new electric head.  We would love to charter her again. Thanks to all the staff of SJS.
09/17/2013 08/31/2013 Sundance 5 4 5 5 5 The dinghy painter was far too long, a hassle to tie and untie.

09/17/2013 08/31/2013 Kallisto 5 5 5 5 5 Thanks so much. We had a wonderful experience with the SJS staff and a great time on board Kallisto! It was great how Roger emphasized the importance of the NSO and celebrated their role with a great gift hat. We shared a couple of simple suggestions during our check out but in all we had a great time.
09/17/2013 08/31/2013 morning light 5 4 4 5 5 Other than making the sun shine every day I don"t think you could have done much else to make the vacation any better than it was.
09/18/2013 08/31/2013 hawthorne Bay 5 5 5 5 5 This is our 5th year to enjoy the outstanding service of SJS!! It just gets better and better each year. We tried the competition one year and learned our lesson so we are back and looking forward to year 6 with SJS.

09/18/2013 08/24/2013 Sapphire 4 5 5 5 5 Great charter and beautiful boat!  Only feedback is we should have stuck with a saturday skipper's checkout - friday eve proved to be too rushed and a bit stressful.  Look forward to a future charter!

09/27/2013 09/14/2013 Esprit de Mer 5 4 3 4 5 Safety equipment could be enlarged with life belts and life raft.   Great area to sail! We enjoied it a lot
09/27/2013 09/07/2013 Hale Kai 5 5 5 5 5 You run a great operation and we will be back.
09/27/2013 Le Château 5 4 4 5 5 San Juan couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly.  We appreciate your help from our first call to the return trip and debriefing.  One thing I forgot was that the belt on the port engine seemed have a little more play in it on the last day.  Not much more and certainly not loose but you might keep an eye on it.
09/27/2013 09/14/2013 Joire  de Vivre 5 2 2 2 3 As you know, our disappointment led to your brilliant and generous upgrade to Escape which saved our charter experience for us!  Great save!  I am now left with doubts about future chartering without actually inspecting the boat in person.  The website pictures of Joire de Vivre were not representing of the boat.
09/27/2013 09/13/2013 Puffin 5 2 1 5 3 Found some throughhulls very hard to operate (need lubrication) .Found the wheel really awkward to pass, even when folded .Alternator was not working when we took over the yacht , consequently we lost all house batteries. Suggest that "battery check" be added to the list of items that new skippers should locate.
09/27/2013 09/13/2013 Hawthorne Bay (Eye Sea Forever out of service) 5 4 3 2 4 Roger was very accommodating in switching boats and absorbing cost of skipper training for us.  Tim Hoving was an excellent instructor and a pleasure to have aboard.
09/28/2013 09/12/2013 Shelly T 5 5 5 5 5 Only one suggestion.  The ceramic coffee mugs cool down your coffee immediately.  In Florida, we use one product exclusively, the infamous Tervis Tumbler. I highly recommend getting a couple of their mugs.
09/28/2013 09/14/2013 Tirsku 5 5 5 5 5 Had a wonderful time
09/28/2013 09/14/2013 KINGFISHER 4 5 5 5 5 An extremely well found boat.  Thank you for a great charter experience, and we look forward to doing it again!  The afternoon/evening checkout worked very well for us, and we would encourage others to use it as well.  Our issues with the boat were minor at best, but I'd like to pass them on to the owners, just for their own information.    The glass shower doors in the head came apart during the trip, binding the glass in the frame in a dangerous manner.  As nice as those doors are, perhaps a simple curtain, or acrylic doors might better stand up to long term charter use.  A long dingy painter, or additional line for beaching (~50ft?) the dinghy would be extremely helpful.  The dinghy itself is fabulous, but the heavy outboard makes it impossible for two people to bring it up the beach.  Some additional lengths of line, maybe stored in the lazarette, would be really helpful for lashing down extra gear (coolers, crab pots, etc) as well.  I also noticed the raw water washdown seacock was only single clamped.  The vacuum cleaner was marginal at best, with a broken handle and inoperative wand.  The "Shorepower 1" breaker's (110V panel) LED lights did not seem to operate, although all other breakers in the panel functioned normally, and the breaker itself seemed fine. The "Horn" breaker on the 12V panel might be relabeled as "Horn compressor" or "Air Horn".  It was a little discerning to turn the breaker on and hear an air compressor fire up in the engine room.  I was unaware at that time that vessel had air horns, which are really nice, by the way.      Most of these issues were laid out with Jon Van Dyken on my Thursday Check-In, but I thought I would list them again, just in case. Thank you once again for providing a remarkably well set up vessel, and a very helpful staff.

The oar lock on the port side of the dingy kept popping out.  The part that is inserted is bent at the bottom.  I bought for SS wire and held it in with that.  3. The autopilot does not hold course.  4.  The aft part of the Bimini leaks like a sieve.    Apart from these issues, the boat was very comfortable and it handled well while sailing.

10/07/2013 09/21/2013 Tsirku 4 4 4 4 4 The boat was generally very clean when we got aboard, but odors from the shower sump and holding tank were pretty obvious.  SJS crew came down and cleaned the sump and that odor went away.  We had great winds on a couple of days and I really enjoyed sailing this boat.  The overall experience with SJS and Tsirku was wonderful; I just seldom give a five-star rating.  Thanks for a great vacation.
10/07/2013 09/21/2013 Puffin 4 5 5 4 4 My wife and I are newbies to boating and have been looking at Island Packet sailboats enthusiastically as our potential "dream" boat thus, chose Puffin to see if this was the "one." Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity and enjoyable outing. I would recommend that the staff might emphasize the importantance and proper use of batteries aboard a boat to us newbies. Fortunately Puffin was forgiving and carried us safely and extremely comfortably along our charter. There was water in the bilges and under a setee apparently from a previous outing. Minor issues for an otherwise very enjoyable charter.

10/07/2013 09/21/2013 Stardust 5 4 4 4 5 The boat didn't have the long stern line I have found on all other SJY boats.  The Magna grill didn't work properly, the regulator would not let enough gas pass through to make it hot enough for proper cooking.  These are just minor things.
